In England, the next terrible outbreak occurred in and this time the nobility were not so fortunate. Henry of Grosmont, Duke of Lancaster, was of royal blood but nothing could save him when plague came knocking.
He died at his castle in Leicester on 23 March and his wife, Isabella Beaumont, fell victim before the end of the year. Grosmont had two daughters, Maud and Blanche.
Her younger sister, Blanche, was the first wife of John of Gaunt, a son of King Edward III, and one source says she too fell victim and died at Tutbury Castle, Staffordshire, on 12 September while her husband was overseas. However, since she died within a few days of giving birth to a child that also died, perhaps post-natal complications were a more likely cause. King Richard was overwhelmed by grief and ordered the palace to be destroyed. The year is not recorded as a year of a plague epidemic in England, so there is no certainty Anne was a victim.
Few years, if any, in England and Europe were entirely free of plague until the later 17th century. In , there was a serious outbreak in London, such that Queen Elizabeth I spent the summer on progress around her kingdom, avoiding the city. However, since she frequently went on such tours, bestowing her presence on wealthy nobles and living at their expense, it is difficult to say whether the plague was her main reason for leaving the south-east of England. There she was entertained by Lord Chandos with an elaborate party that continued for days — all paid for by her host, of course.
By the time she returned to the London area, the epidemic had abated. The plague returned to London with a vengeance in The first cases occurred in the parish of St Giles-in-the-Fields, outside the city walls, in the early spring. It must cost YOU something. It will cost you your Sunday morning to come to church Heb It will cost you your pride to give a sacrifice of praise Heb It will cost you some TV to read your Bible Jam It may cost you some sleep to pray.
It will cost you money to give tithes and offerings and alms Mal But, is it not worth it to stop the plagues in your life and the plagues in the lives of those you lead and love? I watch people go through plagues and I say, "Had they only been at church Sunday and heard the word of the Lord that plague would not have happened.
I need to ask you one final question. Let me tell you about a bad decision I made that brought a plague on this church. I was very upset about something that happened. On the morning of my "bad decision," Judy, my wife, called me. She read me a prophecy showing the upsetting thing that happened was of God. Through it, God would bless us. All I needed to do was be calm. Later that day, I was not calm and made the bad decision. I did something foolish. Within a short time, a plague came upon Life Gate.
We lost people and some of them died spiritually. All the money was gone and we could not pay for our facility. I was in deep distress. I had options. One being leave town and terminate Life Gate Church , but I did nothing. We kept our mouths shut and waited on the Lord's mercy. He paid off the building totally. We burned the note, paved the parking lot, and put in new carpet.
How did we — all of us — stop the plague? Many of you were here and you gave. Some of you told me the wonderful things God did in your lives afterwards.
